I spent last Friday evening on the beach with friends. With the sand in our toes, breathing in the salty air and being lulled by the gentle whooshing of the waves, we watched the sky turn pink, orange, and finally dark blue as the sun slowly set.
finding balance
We humans are meant to be outside. It's easy to forget this at times, and we get caught up in health fads that often come along with sizable price tags, but the outdoors is always here for us. Often, it is the best medicine.
I've jokingly referred to this phase of life in Florida as my retirement, and it certainly has been a welcome change; I have time to spend with friends and family, learn new skills, and prioritize my health. I've been able to truly disconnect from my phone and computer when offline. I exercise consistently and work with a nutritionist. I cook homemade meals and can say yes to fun things that fall within the traditional 9-5 working hours. When I wake up at 3am, I don't worry how I'll manage the day if I can't fall back asleep.
The sensation of true restoration has worked wonders for me, body, mind and soul, and I feel tremendous gratitude for this time. I'm excited to share the things I've learned and how I plan to approach whatever's next in life.
And while rest and some level of autonomy is needed in life, we also need one another, not just for companionship but also for shared purpose and meaning. Much like traveling to a beautiful place, life can only be enjoyed alone to a certain extent. When we work to be valuable and helpful to others, we're happier and more fulfilled ourselves.
